The Smirnoff Co. have announced four unique events set to hit London, showcasing the talents of forward thinking London based promoters. Each has been awarded a Creative Grant of £10,000 as part of Smirnoff’s ongoing commitment to celebrate one-of-a-kind experiences across the UK.
The four lucky promoters were chosen from the many who applied via the dedicated Facebook page and will now create their own original take on a unique night out in London which will take place in September and October.
Rock a Hula! September 18th at Bloomsbury Bowling.
Get ready for a night of rock ‘n’ roll, hula hooping, and swing dancing from Jen Walke and Hannah Kerr, the promoters behind Rock a Hula!
Bloomsbury Bowling will play host to a Hawaiian oasis of Honolulu, grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts and pin up bathing beauties. Sporting matching sunset outfits complete with Elvis shades The Bikini Beach Band and the cream of rockabilly and rhythm blues, Jessie & The Orbits will be performing across the two floors of the venue in the King Pin Suite and The Lanes. Joined by incredible hula hoop performer Pippa The Ripper and resident DJs El Nino (of Black Cotton & Lady Luck fame) and Tim Hellzapoppin’ will ensure you hula ‘til you drop with the pick of the best vintage rock ‘n’ roll from the 1920s-60s.
Nina’s Hair Parlour & Issidora’s Boudoir – the UK’s first vintage hair and make up specialists – will set up shop offering luxurious makeovers, giving ladies 15 minutes in pamper heaven, to emerge as glamorous Hollywood starlets of the 1950s. Hula hoops will be provided, and a beginners lindy hop swing dance lesson at the start of the evening will take you right back to the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll.
White Wedding September 26th at Scala
Born out of the unholy union of three infamous wedding disco crashers, Rob Lewis, Claire Woodcock and Becky Hoghton are creating the best wedding you’ve never been to – White Wedding. Rejoicing in all of the fun bits about getting hitched party goers should anticipate tacky brides, first dances, extraordinary outfits, sausage rolls, blubbing bridesmaids, confetti-hurling, mother-in-law hats, weird uncles, bouquet tossing, group photos and more bad dad-dancing than you can handle.
The Scala nightclub in King’s Cross will be transformed in to a giant wedding marquee, with a wedding themed cabaret room complete with photo booth and dressing up box, a top comedian’s best mans speech, ‘ceremonies’ for friends to take their vows, wedding themed burlesque dancers and a huge free buffet with a slice of the seven-tiered wedding cake for everyone.
Dress code is strictly wedding clobber, so get down to resident DJ Otis Wedding and special guest Tim Westwood’s wedding set, in your white stilettos, veils, hats and vicars outfits. Previous guests at White Wedding have included the likes of Zane Lowe, DJ Yoda and Annie Mac.
Avantgarden October 3rd at Hospital Club.
Hosting an extraordinary party experience, the next promoters in the series are Maria Nicholson and Lauralene Chambovet of the Hospital Club. Featuring performance art and some of the best entertainers, expect the unexpected. Think opera singers in stairwells, gymnasts in the bathroom and ballet dancers on the move creating an indoor avant-garde festival.
The Avantgarden follows last year’s hugely popular exhibition, The Week of Living Dangerously.
Glitter Ball Date and venue to be confirmed.
The final installment comes from 15 strong collective – Girlcore. Celebrating all things sparkly and fantastic, the Glitter Ball will be the crème de la crème of the Girlcore experience. Having hosted parties in Moscow, Paris and New York City the night will feature two surprise headline acts and their very own resident DJs. Dress up to get down and whatever you do, don’t forget the glitter.
The four London events will mark the launch of a new global initiative for 2009. In September details regarding the new expert panel, the creative grants available and how to apply will be announced.
Check the Facebook/SmirnoffGB site for tickets and more information for these events.
