Saved Sundays @ The Source Bar Maidstone

Joy Andrews - Monday 09.08.10, 10:07am

Saved Productions is putting Maidstone back on the map for great club nights.

Its been 10 years since world renowned DJ Nic Fanciulli started playing events in his home town Maidstone in Kent and 5 years since his own record label Saved Records was born. It all began 10 years ago in 2000 when Nic Fanciulli handed out tapes to promoters of  Club Class where the tapes were deemed good enough that Nic was offered a residency on the strength of just 3 of his mixtapes!

10 years on and Nic Fanciulli is now a global star and plays alongside the finest DJ’s and Live acts in every corner of the world. Fanciulli and his production team decided they should celebrate these momentous occasions by returning to his home town with a series of events which will bring back the feel of Atomics, Club Class, The Loft, The River Bar & Saved all rolled into one!

The first main event was when Nic Fanciulli and Pete Tong gigged together at the Source Bar on 12th March. I attended this momentus occasion with my friend Nicki, who was a novice clubber and was treated to a baptism of fire, however, I have to say the whole atmosphere of the Bar was insanely electric, especially when Pete Tong was ushered in through the madding crowds.

Let’s just say, it was a very intimate affair on the dance floor, but the energy in the room was electric. It doesn’t get much better than this in Maidstone….or so we believed!

The inaugural Saved Sunday has arrived, its August 1st and I have to say, I am very excited at the prospect of returning to another Nic Fanciulli gig, as I am a big fan of his music, especially his last CD Global Underground.

Nic’s first special Saved Sunday guest is no other than the mighty Carl Cox – how excited am I.  I spent the best part of the afternoon having my hair curled by my friend’s daughter, as a lady has to look her best to go raving.

Nic Fanciulli was exceptional as ever and we danced for most of his session and then at midnight Carl Cox took over the turntables/digital podium.  I can only describe the experience of his mixing as the most awesome mixing I have ever experienced. Carl Cox needs no introduction. Having been a DJ since the age of 15 where in 1977 he took himself to the turntables, he is a perfect example of how age is but a number. Carl Cox’s passion for his music is without doubt highly infectious.

The beauty of music, including dance music is that it isn’t ageist, you can be a fan of music for your whole life and you can be a musician too – Bowie and The Stones aree testimony to this. Music and Dancing are food for the soul, which needs feeding regularly in my opinion. I am pleased to say, I was not the oldest raver in town by a long shot. I recall seeing a couple, who I would say were in their early 50’s. They were giving Cox’s music some serious attention on the dance floor. I recall one moment during his set and to the delight of us dancers on the dance floor, when Cox mixes in New Orders Blue Monday. Yep, the 80’s are definitely back folks; this mighty tune raised the roof.

I am delighted to inform you, that my friend and I danced for 2 hours solid to Carl Cox. My friend at one point said how tired she was; hell yeah, I said,  I was too, but I looked at my watch and there was only 25 minutes left to go. I said to Nicki, “we don’t do this often, so lets just go for it” Looking around the floor, the smiles on the faces of the masses told the story. Carl Cox, Nic Fanciulli and 100’s of other music lovers were dancing and smiling with delight and that night was probably the best nights dancing I have ever had.

My friend and I hobbled back to my car at the end of the night. We could barely walk, but we had had the most fantastic night out and all for the price of £10 for a ticket. It was INSANE!

I am extremely excited about my Next Saved Sunday with Loco Dice and Nic Fanciulli @ Source Bar Maidstone August 15th which is the 5th birthday of Saved and to celebrate other top DJ’s Mark Broom, Steve Mac and Alex Tepper will be taking over the Courtyard .
