Minilogue – Animals (Cocoon Records)
Minilogue released their debut album earlier this year. But as with so much music, sometimes the odd classic escapes me.
Minilogue are from Malmö in Sweden. Minilogue is Marcus Henriksson and Sebastian Mullaert. They are two mostly known as being two minimal producers and released progressive techno tracks; and Animals successfully manages to merge all their influences and genres into one wonderful album.
Animals is a double album divided into two categories: Dance and Ambient. Best described as songs for the main minimal progressive event, followed by early morning K chill out vagueness.
The Dance CD is full of analogue bleeps and minimal trance beats. The tracks drift into to each other, rather than being mixed, which helps you listen to the whole CD as a complelte trip rather than as individual songs. This I like. It reminds me of the way Primal Scream’s Screamadelica allowed the listener to fully indulge in the full journey; almost as if it were one long track.
That said, it didn’t stop me dropping three tracks into a recent DJ set, all of which went down a storm. We All, 33000 Honeybees and Jamaica are crowd-pleasing floor fillers in their own right.
The Ambient CD allows the glitchy bleeps of the Dance CD to take centre-stage, and in doing so offers fresh juice to any chill out gathering. Six Arms And One Leg is not only one of the best titles you’re likely to come across for a while, but is truly one monolithic minimalist ambient track, suitable for any k-drenched social event.
Animals by Minilogue is a wonderful album in an ocean of mediocrity. Best Album Of The Year? Of course.
