MOS The Annual 2010

To celebrate the launch of the latest Ministry Of Sound compilation album The Annual 2010, MOS have set up two microsites featuring exclusive competitions,  one offering the chance to win a lifetime VIP Membership to Ministry Of Sound’s world famous club in London and the other offering the chance to enter a remix competition and win a one day Super Club DJ Academy spot.

Micro-site www.theannual2010.co.uk sees Ministry Of Sound giving away a free VIP membership to their internationally-renowned club in London. The prize entitles the lucky winner to no queuing and free admission to club nights at the capital venue for them and a friend – for life!

All contest entrants also receive a free Minimix download, featuring highlights from The Annual 2010 release.

Budding DJs meanwhile, are being offered the chance to remix one of Ministry of Sound’s tracks on the microsite www.ministryofsound.com/annual2010remix.

Visitors can access stems for the Tina More single Touch Me, create their very own version of the track and upload it to the website for judging. Fellow dance fans will cast their votes and one winner will be selected from the top five most popular remixes by the label to receive the DJ Academy prize.

The triumphant entrant will receive a one-day Super Club DJ experience at the special workshop at the world-famous Ministry Of Sound club. The winner will also have their remix featured on the label’s official website and newsletter, while four runners-up will receive a section of ten Ministry Of Sound albums.

The label’s DJ Academy sees aspiring DJs and dance music fanatics kick-starting their own careers by learning firsthand from dance music icons and expert tutors.

Irish electro-pop band Empire State Human

Do you fancy your chances as a top remixer?

In collaboration with Irish electro-pop band Empire State Human and their label Ninthwave Records, the Laptoprockers website has set up a competition to remix the track ‘Melancholic Afro’.

The track features vocals and beats supplied by original Kraftwerk member, Wolfgang Flür.

Lead singer of the band, Aidan Casserly, explains, “Wolfgang Flür created the backbeats and some catchy vocal lines for the track. Other than that it has a Prodigy as well as a T-Rex feel.”

Empire State Human are the first Irish group t work with a former Kraftwerk member. “We still can’t believe our luck, and are curious what remixers will come up with. We’re looking for exciting and unique entries which will expand the original track into another music direction and level,” said Casserly.

The prize pool for this contest is filled with some top notch plug-ins supplied by Izotope, makers of the highly acclaimed ‘Ozone’ mastering plug-in.

Laptoprockers is a webzine about music and related technology, featuring daily news and interviews – with a strong focus towards remixing. This is the second time Laptoprockers organizes a remix contest. “Go on with the right track, good luck with it,” comments Wolfgang Flür in a reaction on the website.

KREATE the Techno, Dance & Minimal Environment

KREATE Sounds Library Software Review

For those who are maybe new to the genre or just getting started, Speedy J is the genius behind monster techno tracks such as Tunox, Seven_Trak and more recently the great Drippelzimmer and remixed the likes of Vanguard’s – Feieralarm  and Adam Beyers – Ignition.

Speedy J has always embraced technology and sought out newer and better ways to help uncrack the code of his ideas and translate them to audio.  So it comes as no surprise to find out that he’s the man behind Fixed Noises’ KREATE.

On the box KREATE promises to deliver over 4 GB of sounds and 500 instruments (instruments designed by none less than Speedy J himself) and includes all the elements you’ll need to create your own Techno/Dance/Minimal track.

After installing KREATE I couldn’t wait to dive in and browse the library; and the special version Native Instruments Kontakt player 2 that’s included make this really easy.  All sounds and instruments are arranged into categories: FX, Kits, Konstrukt, Loops, Sequence and Tones.

At first I was cursing like mad, I was so disappointed by the sounds and instruments, each one had this distorted grainy effect to it that was driving me mad, thought what’s the point of having a sound library that has effects applied to it already??  But then I soon calmed down after I realised it was either my sound card or system config as once I loaded it into Acid (I chose Acid for it’s simplicity allowing me to concentrate on the raw sounds and instruments themselves rather than spend hours of fun changing them in something like Reason) I got to hear the beast that this library truly is and was really impressed by the sounds and instruments.

Fixed Noise have been totally modest in the description of what they’re selling to you, What you’re actually buying is a monster lurking in a box ready and waiting for you to command it to terrorise and strike fear into the hearts of people or an angel waiting to spread calm and spiritual thoughts through the power of a chilled track.

And there lies the beauty of this sound library.  The variety of sounds is so expansive that you can bend and mould it into your own particular taste of music with very little effort.  From the deepest dirtiest bass notes to chilled melodic atmospherics, it’s all there waiting for you.

Then comes the price tag.  The RRP on this is $199.99 which at the moment works out to be about £108, in my opinion that makes it a bargain and a worthwhile addition to any collectors sound library.
