Album Review – Liquid Liquid – Slip In & Out Of The Phenomenon (Domino Records)
Domino Records has released a retrospective compilation of the seminal early 1980’s cult New York punk funk quartet, Liquid Liquid.
Slip In & Out Of The Phenomenon is a compilation from Liquid Liquid’s 3 EP’s plus live and previously unreleased material – 23 tracks in all.
Though Liquid Liquid never made a commercial splash they have been cited as an influence to many dance artists and genres.
The music is an experimental and raw jazz funk fusion with post punk influences and similar to other groups experimenting with percussion, punk ethic and funk rhythms of that era such as 23 Skidoo and A Certain Ratio at their most experimental; and Sal Principato’s vocal chants are reminiscent in parts of The Pop Group’s Mark Stewart.
Liquid Liquid have now received cult status. There is a Glasgow club named after one of their tracks, Optimo. And Cavern includes the most famous bassline of all time, courtesy of a sample for the hit single White Lines by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five.
Slip In & Out Of The Phenomenon will be a great retrospective for 40-somethings that wish to add a Liquid Liquid compilation to their CD collection or a perfect introduction to an important, if not somewhat overlooked, genre of punk and funk fusion from the early 1980’s.
